This is Ali Baba's treasure house doubling up as a hotel: a fantastic menagerie of oriental kilims, antique armchairs, calligraphic plates, bronze candle stands, old Turkish door panes and a piano that fills the maze-like recesses of two historic townhouses. The lobby is lit by a thousand and two individually crafted lamps of antique glass - one better than the proverbial nights. Best of all it has grown "organically", and the slick touch of the designer is nowhere to be felt. Each of the 16 smallish bedrooms, brimming with colourful kilims, antique candle stands, colourful old bottles and various other trinkets, are very comfortable and are fitted with elegant marble en suite bathrooms. Pink and green walls complement the whole garish effect. Each morning breakfast is served in a colourful courtyard. The Ottoman House adjacent to the garden offers you a cool and relaxing atmosphere. The Kybele Hotel is ideally located in the centre of the old city. The Blue Mosque, Saint Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Covered Bazaar and the harbour are within walking distance.

Designed by former circus owners, one of the many eccentric features of the Kybele is the 1000-plus vintage glass lamps hanging from the ceilings.
